Schönberg

“Meran of the Bavarian Forest”

Owing to its idyllic location at Mount Kadernberg ant its unique blaze of colour, Markt Schönberg is reminiscent of the South Tyrolean original. The market place is the heart of Schönberg: It exudes a particularly cosy flair with its cheerfully colourful houses. It is the hub of the village, meeting point for the locals and a starting point for many excursions and hiking tours around Schönberg.

Markt Schönberg, at the southernmost point of the holiday region National Park Bavarian Forest, has towered over the valley Mitternacher Ohe since the end of the 13th century. The colourful houses at both sides of the roundabout were built in Inn-Salzbach style and attract countless tourists every year. Elaborately created facades and curved mock gables testify to wealth of the old trading place. Under the tall chestnut trees near the Pfarrkirche (parish church) “St. Margareta”, visitors can watch the vivid hustle and bustle. From the church, the guests of Schönberg have a beautiful view of the Bavarian Bohemian border mountain range with Mount Rachel and Mount Lusen. The two impressive hiking mountains are only a few minutes away by car. In particularly good and clear weather, you can even see the Alp mountain range on the opposite side.
