Closures and Restrictions

The core areas of the National Park are temporarily closed to protect sensitive species such as the capercaillie. An overview of all restrictions on the paths and whether a diversion has been signposted can be found in the path service of the National Park.

Certain roads in the holiday region are mostly open to car traffic until the hedgehog season. After that, as every year, road closures apply for the benefit of the hedgehog buses.

Road closures

Rachel

Diensthüttenstraße

(car parking Diensthüttenstraße to the Racheldiensthütte)

The Diensthüttenstraße is closed from May 15th to October 31st every year from 8am to 6pm (during this time the Igelbus runs here!).

In autumn/winter the road is closed as soon as the first snowfall occurs. The reason is that there is no winter service for this area and black ice can already occur in cold weather. The road will also not be cleared when snow begins to fall. The closure is then valid for the entire winter season.

Schwarzachstraße

(car parking P+R in Spiegelau to the Gfäll)

Notice:

Closure Schwarzachstraße to the Gfäll from 19.07.21!

Due to renovation work, the "Gfäll-Straße" will be completely closed from 19.07.2021! The Gfäll parking space can therefore NOT be approached.

There is a replacement schedule as long as the construction site exists! You can find more info here

The Diensthüttenstraße is closed in the period 15 May to 31 October each year from 8-18 clock (in this time the hedgehog bus runs here!)

Lusenstraße

(Waldhäuser to car parking Waldhausreibe)

No opening in the winter season: closed from 1 November to 14 May

Böhmstraße

The Lusenstraße is closed in the period 15 May to 31 October each year from 9-16 clock

No opening in the winter season: closed from 1 November to 14 May

Buchwaldstraße

(car parking Wistlberg to the border crossing Bucina)

The Buchwaldstraße is closed in the period from 15 May to 31 October each year from 9-17 o'clock (in this time the Igelbus runs here!).

In autumn/winter the road is closed as soon as the first snowfall occurs. The reason is that there is no winter service for this area and black ice can already occur in cold weather. The road will also not be cleared when snow begins to fall. The closure is then valid for the entire winter season.

Road closure of the National Park Road between Weidhütte and Glashütte

from 23.08.2021

Construction work between Glashütte and Weidhütte will start on 23.08.2021 and is expected to last 8 weeks. During this time a closure of the road is necessary.

Please note the corresponding detour.

The so-called national park road between Mauth and Spiegelau is in the road construction trust of the district of Freyung-Grafenau.

Next week, construction work will begin on another section (last year, a section between : In the next few weeks, the road between Weidhütte and Glashütte will be rehabilitated.

The Free State of Bavaria is investing over one million euros in this project. With this, the Free State of Bavaria is implementing a further part of the measures from the national park package that was put together for the 50th anniversary of the national park. As part of the National Park package, the State of Bavaria is making available a total of around 20 million euros for the repair of the road infrastructure around the park. The largest part of this, 16.6 million euros alone, is earmarked for the rehabilitation of the roadway, bridges and retaining walls of the National Park base road between Mauth and Spiegelau.

The measures on the National Park Road will be continued successively over the next few years.

You can find everything else about the current measure here

Notes

Supplementary to the closure of Schwarzachstraße

In addition to the closure of Schwarzachstraße/Gfällstraße, which will be closed for a longer period of time due to the complete renovation, we have the following information, referring to the information from the National Park Administration. Appropriate signage will be provided.

Here is the most important information:

  • the entire Schwarzachstraße will be completely closed for the duration of the construction work.
  • the main hiking trail will be completely closed between Klingenbrunn train station (P Flanitzebene) and Kurpark Spiegelau (Waldbahngleis branch). A detour will be set up, leading from the Waldspielgelände via the P+R Spiegelau, the circular trail Feldhase and the hiking trail Bärlapp.
  • the cycle path 89,99 and national park cycle path through the Klingenbrunn forest will be closed, a diversion via the Transbayerwald will be set up.
  • the bridle path through the Klingenbrunn Forest will be closed.
  • the cycle path 98 from P Flanitzebene to the north will be completely closed directly at P Flanitzebene
  • the hiking trail Bärlapp between Klingenbrunner Rachelsteig to Gfäll will be completely closed (for pedestrians and hikers)
  • the cycle path 98 east of Schwarzachstraße will be completely closed between the crossing of Wanderlinie Ahorn and Schwarzachstraße.
  • the feeder road "Zum Goldsteig" between Rundweg Feldhase and Schwarzachstraße will be closed completely
  • the Seelensteig, Aufichtenwaldsteg and Moorwaldsteg are not accessible and therefore closed
  • the hedgehog bus stops along Schwarzachstraße will not be served.

Important:

  • the Auerhahn circular trail remains completely accessible, at Gfäll a route for hikers will be separated from the construction site by means of a construction fence.
  • The Klingenbrunn Rachelsteig trail also remains completely accessible.

Stay on the paths in the core area

From 16 November up to and including 14 July each year, the so-called "trail ban" applies in the National Park core area. This means that in particularly sensitive areas of the protected area, it is NOT allowed to leave the marked trails and therefore the other trails and paths, such as the Grenzsteig, may no longer be accessed.

Why and why not?

You can find more information on the website of the Bavarian Forest National Park and in their current press release "In the core area you must now stay on the paths".

Obstructions around the Reschbachstraße (Mauth)

From Monday, 11 October, there will be obstructions on the Reschbachstraße near Mauth between the junction with the Nationalparkstraße and the Schustersäge due to construction work. This means that restrictions are to be expected on the surrounding hiking and biking trails for about two weeks. From Monday, October 11, preparatory measures will be carried out, for which a complete closure is not yet necessary and also the two parking lots Jägerstraßl and Sandriegel can still be approached. Only obstructions are to be expected.

From Monday, October 18, the Reschbachstraße including the parking lots Jägerstraßl and Sandriegel will be closed. The parking lots Schwarzbachbrücke and Oberes Reschbachtal, however, can still be reached from the north. Hikers and cyclists can use the Dreikönigs-Loipe parking lot in Mauth during this week and reach the trail network via Jägerstraßl past the construction site.

From Monday, 25 October, this crossing is no longer possible due to the full closure of the road. During this period, the hiking region west of Mauth can only be reached via the Obere Reschbachtal with the Schwarzbachbrücke and Oberes Reschbachtal car parks or via the rock hiking area near Glashütte. Hikers on the Goldsteig are recommended to follow the hiking line "Arnika" from the Tummelplatz into the Obere Reschbachtal. The "Via Nova" hiking line can be reached via the "Hauptwanderweg" (Three Trees) marker, which leads back to Mauth and onto the Goldsteig route. On site, signs point out the closed areas.

Hiking trail between Graupsäge and Waldhäuser closed

Sewer construction work expected to last five weeks

The hiking trail with the markings "Fichte" and "Goldener Steig" between Waldhäuser and Graupsäge will be completely closed from Monday, October 11, for an estimated five weeks. The reason is the construction of a sewer line from Altschönau to Waldhäuser. Signs will be posted on site to indicate the closed area.

During this time, there will be rail replacement services.
