Vom Wald das Beste. – Nationalparkregion Bayerischer Wald

Untouched natural spectacle in the National Park

Directly in the National Park Bavarian Forest and on Glasstraße (glass road) lies the health resort Spiegelau. With its untouched nature and fresh air, it attracts a lot of visitors to the well signposted hiking paths. Since the 15th century, the inhabitants of Spiegelau have utilised the quartz deposit and the wood of the Bavarian Forest for glass production.

At the southernmost foothill of Mount Großer Rachel (1,453 metres) the community Spiegelau extends with its districts Klingenbrunn and Oberkreuzberg. It is particularly renowned for its unique nature, most of all for the wild and romantic Steinklamm.

It counts among the “oddities of nature the most worth seeing” of the Bavarian Forest: The roaring waters of the Große Ohe, the eroded whirlpool holes and a fascinating gorge with a unique diversity of plants characterise the natural spectacle. All hiking paths are equipped with QR-codes, so that all interesting information about the sights or about Spiegelau’s history can easily be downloaded on your smartphone. Families are happy about the forest playground with its natural adventure trail, and enjoy swimming fun without chemicals in the natural pool with a minigolf course as well as a beach volleyball field.  Refreshment is also provided by the barrier-free natural Kneipp facility in the garden of the health resort.

Winter sport fans get their money’s worth on cross-country ski trails of a total length of more than 50 kilometres, a night trail, two toboggan runs, a natural ice rink as well as 40 kilometres of cleared winter hiking paths, among other things.

With the National Park Card numerous hiking and excursion destinations can be reached by bus and forest train from Spiegelau environmental-friendly and free of charge.

In the middle of July you can celebrate the historic Pandurenfest (Pandurs celebration), and in August there is the Spechtfest (woodpecker’s celebration) on the Waldwiese, next to the forest playground.
