Vom Wald das Beste. – Nationalparkregion Bayerischer Wald

Hiking in the Bavarian Forest

Simply limitless - that's how the hiking opportunities in the Bavarian Forest National Park vacation region appear. Explore the varied and exciting hiking world in and around the National Park - many hundreds of kilometers of well-signposted circular and destination hiking trails make our low mountain range one of the most popular hiking regions in all of Central Europe. Whether you want to climb one of our Bavarian Forest mountains Rachel, Lusen, Falkenstein or Arber, enjoy the wonderful panoramic tours or gain an in-depth insight into the vacation region on the various themed trails - the possibilities seem almost endless.

The best for hikers.

In the two animal enclosures in the Lusen and Falkenstein national park centers, you can observe and discover the fascinating animal world: Wolves, lynx, brown bears, moose and many other animal species can live according to their own daily rhythm in the large enclosure zones, which are modeled on natural habitats - climbing, bathing, resting or even retreating completely.

Discover the forest wilderness

An absolute top hiking trail is the Goldsteig premium hiking trail, which runs right through the Bavarian Forest and the vacation region. On a total of 660 km, from Marktredwitz to Passau, you can discover the originality and special features of the Bavarian Forest vacation region.

The Goldsteig naturally also opens up the Bavarian Forest National Park vacation region and, in combination with the main route, which leads over the Bavarian Forest mountains of Arber, Falkenstein, Rachel and Lusen, among others, our hiking guests can hike a complete Goldsteig circuit in the vacation region with the so-called alternative route.

Tips for your hikes

To make your hiking trip a real highlight: 6 tips from the German Alpine Association for planning your tours on the road:

1. realistically assess your own ability and select suitable tours

2. check the tour description in relation to your own fitness level

3. compare tour descriptions on several portals/apps (e.g. komoot)

4. use tours and tour recommendations from official sources such as national parks, tourist information offices, Alpine associations, nature parks

5. a good hiking map on paper, compass, food, drinks, optimal clothing, flashlight, first-aid kit, cell phone and power bank for charging belong in your hiking luggage

6. always compare planned digital tours with local information, signposting and trail markings and adapt them if necessary

A defensive attitude is always required on the mountain - don't take any unnecessary risks and, if in doubt, turn back.

Hiking luggage

That has to go in!

A packing list for mountain hiking - recommended by the German Alpine Association (DAV):

Essentials:

No hiking rucksack should be withoutcash for small or large appetites and an ID card just in case.

Hiking:

Sturdy footwear (hiking boots + hiking socks), the right rucksack, hiking poles and an appropriate hiking map.

Catering:

Sufficient food (preferably in the snack box) and a drinking bottle for refilling. Reusable crockery avoids unnecessary waste. Also: energy sources such as muesli bars, nuts or glucose.

Clothing:

In addition to sturdy footwear (hiking boots + hiking socks), functional clothing is an ideal starting point. Depending on the weather headband, multifunctional scarf or gloves to keep you warm in cold weather or rainwear to cover up and a light change of underwear can be useful.

Safety:

In case of emergencies, your own smartphone with a saved emergency number (internationally valid: 112) should not be missing. On longer hikes, a cell phone charging cable or power bank can be useful to ensure you can be reached and act in an emergency. For minor emergencies: a first aid kit, blister plasters and, if necessary, your own medication . Headlamps and flashlights are also helpful - in case your cell phone battery runs low. On hot days: don't forget suitable sun protection (e.g. sun cream, headgear).

Overnight stay:

Ahut sleeping bag, a small towel and your own washing kit are a good basis. Earplugs are recommended for light sleepers.

Miscellaneous:

A pocket knife for snacks and a seat pad for the next break.
